Detail:

There are 439 species of birds in this country, of which 236 are breeding residents, 203 are migratory, and the remainder are vagrants.Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world for bird-watching tours since it has 33 endemic species and 68 endemic subspecies of birds, with a species endemism rate of 11%. This also includes endemic species such as the pigeon, barbet, fowl, parrots, parakeets, malkoha, coucal, owl, warbler, babbler, thrush, white-eye, mynah, starling, flycatcher, flowerpecker, flameback, woodshrike, drongo, and swallow.

There are also up to 200 seasonal migratory species, both terrestrial and aquatic, that migrate south to avoid the harsh northern winters. These birds come from as far away as Siberia, Scandinavia, and Western Europe, and they arrive in the months of August and September and go in the months of April and May.

Due to its location at the furthest southern point from southern India and the absence of any other landmass until the South Pole, Sri Lanka is a popular wintering destination for migratory birds. The ibis, pelicans, herons, egrets, openbill, cormorant, watercock, swamphen, waterhen, stilts, duck, and grebe are a few of the migrants.

Common sighting locations:

Kumana National Park: One of the most significant nesting and breeding places in Sri Lanka, is the country’s primary bird sanctuary.

Bundala National Park:  A popular birding area with flocks of flamingos, herons, and storks, is located at the southernmost point of the bird migration path.

National Parks:  Yala, Wilpattu, Udawalawe, Wasgamuwa, Horton Plains, and Minneriya.

Other locations: Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, Sinharaja Rain Forest, Bodinagala Forest Reserve, and Kitulgala Forest Reserve.
